Kansas is a fantastic place for hunters. The variety of animals and the diverse ecosystems, provide something for everyone. From squirrel to elk, Kansas offers all ranges of game.
Elk are primarily hunted at the Fort Riley Military Reservation. However there are some free ranging herds, and hunting is allowed (by permit) in all counties except Morton.
Southeast Kansas is a great place to hunt deer, squirrel, eastern turkey, quail, and rabbit. The Ozark Plateau in the far southeast is the wettest region of Kansas. Here you can hunt deer, turkey, squirrel, rabbit, and bobwhite quail. The Red Hills of south-central Kansas is home to bobwhite quail, turkey, and deer.
Upland birds, deer, turkey, and water fowl are found in the central lowlands. The Arkansas River lowlands also offers deer and turkey, as well as prairie chicken, quail, and pheasant.
The rolling grasslands of the Flint Hills will also provide hunting for the Kansas’ frequent four: quail, deer, turkey, and the greater prairie chicken.
The western third of Kansas is known as the High Plains. Here is where you need to go if you want to hunt for ring-necked pheasant, lesser prairie chickens, mule deer as well as whitetails, and limited amounts of antelope.
The far northeast section of Kansas is a glaciated region. Here you will find deer, turkey, bobwhite quail, rabbit, and squirrel. In north-central Kansas are the Smokey Hills. Again, deer, turkey, and quail can be hunted here. Also, pheasant and prairie chicken are available.
There are several walk-in hunting areas and controlled shooting areas in Kansas. The Kansas Department of Wildlife is a great resource to get more information about these areas, as well as permits, rules, and regulations. It may be worth you money to get a guide. Some of the best hunting in Kansas is on private land. Private land reduces the competition that exists on public hunting grounds, and may offer the chance to obtain better quality game.
